David Ingram

I grew up in a home under parents who loved God and knew him intimately as their Lord and Savior. They taught their children about God and made sure that the family worshiped at church every Sunday, so I learned about God and His Son, Jesus, from the time I was born. I had a lot of friends at church. When I was about 6 years old, I noticed some of my friends walking down to the front of the church at the end of the sermons. Then I watched some of them get baptized. I became curious about what they were doing, so I asked my parents to explain it to me. They told me about Jesus dying on the cross for my sins and that my friends had prayed to Jesus to ask Him to forgive them of their sins and save them. They explained that my friends had gone to the front of the church to tell the church about their decision to trust Jesus for their salvation and their desire to be baptized as a public symbol of their decision. Then they told me that when I was ready, I could do the same thing my friends had done – pray to Jesus, ask Him to forgive me of my sins and save me, then make my decision public and be baptized.

Not long after that, one Sunday night, after the pastor finished preaching, I knew that God was calling me to be saved and become a Christian. I began to cry, and my mother asked me what was wrong. I told her that I wanted to be saved and become a Christian. She asked me if I wanted to go talk with the pastor, and I said, “Yes.” She took my hand, and we went to the front of the church. I told the pastor that I wanted to be saved and become a Christian. He asked me some questions to confirm that I knew what I was doing and then led me in a prayer asking Jesus to save me. My decision was told to the church. The next week, I told one of my friends about how I had been saved and encouraged him to be saved, too. Several months later, I was baptized as a public symbol that I had asked Jesus to save me.

As I got older, I gained a greater understanding of my sin and Jesus’ death on the cross, satisfying God’s judgment against me because of my sin. Although I never did anything really bad, I still sinned by telling white lies, talking about others behind their backs, rebelling against authority, having a bad attitude, and disobeying my parents, among other things. Whenever God would make me aware of my sins, I would pray and ask Him to forgive me and to help me to live without sinning.
