David Rawles

As I was growing up, the oldest of 4 children, with both parents working, I thought I was king of the world. I had freedom and fun and little need for anything else. I, like both my parents, was not raised in a Christian home, so when asked what my religion was I would unconfidently say, "I'm Christian" My parents taught me to rely on myself, my wits, my performance and my skills. Mom and Dad drank and smoked, so when I went off to college, I grew up ... that meant drinking and smoking and working two jobs to get through school. I just relied on me. Everything was great!

During college, a young man who was with Campus Crusade for Christ asked if he could sit and speak with me ... I said sure, and for about 40 minutes he shared the gospel of Jesus Christ. I thanked him and politely declined his invitation to receive Christ as my Savior. I told him that everything was going well and I didn't need religion. After finishing college and getting married and starting my professional business career, things began to unravel, first in my marriage and so I called someone who might know how to help. I knew I could no longer succeed on my own. I finally surrendered to a tug on my heart ever since that day in college when I was first told about the plan of salvation. Over the phone my new friend led me to my knees and then led me in a prayer to receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I went to church by myself the following Sunday, then Monday, Tuesday and so on. The Joy was overflowing. My peace was beyond anything I had experienced. I was hungry for the Word and was in church 4-5 nights each week, growing in knowledge of God's principles for my life. I told my brother and sisters and my parents. My dad thought I had lost my marbles, but listened as I shared my new found JOY!

I no longer had to carry everything by myself. That first year was one of great spiritual growth and transformation, from the inside. I have had setbacks when the enemy tricks me into believing that I must do it alone or I must live life in my own power. But Jesus has never let me stumble when He didn't also give me a hand up. He has filled every need throughout my life, even during major tragedies along the way. And over the years I have learned that upon planting seeds, some will fall on good soil and germinate. My brother and his wife both received Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Then my father ... later my mother. Later my two sons. And my oldest grandson. And my greatest prayer is that they and their children grow in the saving knowledge of Jesus and plant seeds of their own.
