Eddie Price

I grew up as an only child of protective parents who wanted good things for me. My parents taught me the importance of working hard and always doing my very best. One of my favorite pastimes was drawing, and my talent was noticed by both teachers and peers. The idea of designing buildings as an architect fascinated me and was only reinforced when I learned that successful architects were well paid. I often drew floor plans and sketches of houses I would like to live in. In reality, our modest home was very small and cluttered. Our basic needs were taken care of, but I wanted so much more than that. I had a sharp eye for detail and was keenly aware of outward appearances. I envied those who dressed in the latest fashion, drove new cars, and lived in spacious manicured homes. I craved wealth and the ability to acquire material possessions. It seemed that my family couldn’t compete with those I envied, and I looked forward to the day I would make my own mark on the world. I often made lists of the things I would acquire when I had a million dollars to spend. The more I focused on my goals of prosperity, the more dissatisfied I became with my current circumstances.

My parents were religious, so I grew up attending church services. These were mostly positive experiences, and I learned a lot about God and Jesus and faith. The Bible was presented as an instruction book for living that was filled with wisdom. I came to understand that Jesus wants us to know him and to have a relationship with him. Eventually, I realized that my pursuit of material wealth had become such a priority in my life that it was a barrier between Jesus Christ and me and was hindering my ability to submit to his direction in my life. I discovered that in order to experience real peace and fulfillment, I needed to redirect my passion and priority to following Jesus instead of acquiring wealth.

Once I recognized how desperately I needed Christ I made the best decision of my life. I placed all of my trust in Jesus and asked him to come into my life and change me from the inside out. As I reflect on the years since that day, I can see how God has directed my life and blessed me in ways I never expected. I didn’t realize that my craving for wealth and material possessions could never be satisfied no matter how successful I became. Today, though I’m not an architect or a millionaire, I am a very wealthy man indeed, for I experience joy and peace and contentment and satisfying relationships that can’t be purchased. Day by day as I submit myself to Jesus’ authority and my character becomes more like his, I’m experiencing a sense of fulfillment in living out his purpose for my life.
