Jeri Ann Long

I was raised in a home that believed that Jesus Christ was the son of God, and attended a small church every Sunday in Anaheim, California.  It was in this small bible teaching Church that I was taught about my sinful nature and that I was a sinner.  I was taught me that my sins could be forgiven. They taught me that God had sent his only son, Jesus to die on a cross; that through believing in him, I might have eternal life (John 3:16).  I also learned that it’s by God’s grace we are saved through faith in Jesus Christ…it is a gift from God and cannot be earned (Eph 2:8-9).  After hearing the lesson that day in Children’s church I felt a prompting inside of me, I wanted to be forgiven and Jesus to be my savior.  I made a profession of faith that day at the age of 6.  I was not only a part of the Barker family, but now I had been adopted into the family of God.

Several years later at the age of twelve my mother was diagnosed with cancer.  I remember asking God the question “why”.  She passed away of cancer the following year.  I felt my faith was being tested.  I remember asking God how I could live without a mother to guide me in these growing years of being a teenager.  Despite the pain and loss I was feeling, I felt at peace knowing that I was not alone in this, God was with me.  A year later, God provided an answer.  He had provided my Dad with a loving woman and a mother for his four teenage kids.  I liked her but love this woman as my mother? I was not sure that would be possible, but God showed me that it is through his love for me that I could love her.  A few years later she met with me and my sisters and said that she wanted to become our mother legally.   That she loved me so much that being a stepmother was not enough.  But my sisters and I had a say in whether we wanted to accept being adopted.  God had shown me his love again through this woman’s love.  God sent his son to die for my sins and upon accepting him as my savior, my sins would be forgiven and I too would be his, his family.  I have been adopted twice, once by my mother and another by God.  God has shown me that I am his completely.
